  • The release of Honda Sony Mobility vehicle is expected to be sometime in 2025 and will be for sale at 6th Avenue Honda in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Something big is happening in 2025. Honda has signed a joint venture agreement with Sony, the dominant tech company, to form Sony Honda Mobility Inc. Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, they plan to start producing electric vehicles and mobility services, with plans to begin sales in 2025. You heard us right and 6th Avenue Honda has all the deets right here, so keep reading!

Honda and Sony

Last year, Honda committed to only selling battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles by 2040, and this collaboration with Sony is a step in the right direction. Both of these industry giants bring a lot to the table. Honda will bring in decades of car-building expertise, while Sony boasts a great deal of experience in network, entertainment, sensing, imaging, and telecommunication technologies.

“The New Company will aim to stand at the forefront of innovation, evolution, and expansion of mobility around the world, by taking a broad and ambitious approach to creating value that exceeds the expectations and imagination of customers,” said Toshihiro Mibe, CEO of Honda Motor.

Sony Honda Mobility is lead by Yasuhide Mizuno, a senior Honda executive, as chairman and CEO, while Izumi Kawanishi, an executive vice president at Sony, will take the position of president and chief operating officer. They will each have a 50-percent stake in the new company.

The EV Industry Take Over

Honda and Sony both just recently entered the EV industry. Honda broke into the market of electric vehicles earlier this year with a partnership with GM. While working with GM, Honda is releasing two 2024 EV models, and plans to continue to create more in the future. Sony has some skin in the game as well. With their two EV concept vehicles, the Vision-S 01 and Vision-S 02, that we saw in 2020 and 2022. Sony did state that they had no plans to mass-produce or sell the vehicle, and the company’s main focus in the presentation was their software and entertainment developments.

Sony isn’t the first technology company to announce their desire to build electric vehicles. There’s a rumor that Apple has been working with car companies to get their own vehicle into production. However, Sony is the first to officially confirm a plan to build, sell, and release a production car.

What Will This Collaboration Look Like?

Currently, we are left to speculate how this collaboration will come into fruition. So far, there has been word about Honda manufacturing the vehicles in their facilities, while Sony will be in charge of creating the software and entertainment content for the mobility service. We are thinking that we should expect a Honda model with Sony designed infotainment and sensing technology. We do have to wonder what name these vehicles will be sold under. Will they be branded as Hondas, or maybe something along the lines of Honda, powered by Sony? There are so many possibilities, but only time will tell.

Sony envisions that the Sony Honda Mobility vehicles will be connected to the cloud, much like Tesla Inc. vehicles, and equipped with in-house sensors that will eventually enable level-four autonomous driving. This technology does not require human interaction in many circumstances, and frees up the driver to focus on other things, possibly Sony entertainment content. Honda confirmed these technologies are under consideration for future joint-venture models.

Sony Honda Mobility will utilize the strengths of both companies, with Honda bringing in experience of producing and selling cars, and Sony its software and technology know-how. Today’s cars are becoming more reliant on consumer and communications technologies, so it does make sense that these companies have come together to do exactly that. This joint-venture was just announced this March, so we are hoping to get more definitive details on their plans in the near future.
