  • As far as performance goes, the 2019 Civic Type R performs at a higher rate than the Veloster N, but both have significant performances each with 6 speed manual transmission options.
  • The biggest distinction between the Veloster N and the Type R is the amount of in-vehicle customizability available in the Veloster N as opposed to the Type R.

When it comes to comparing the 2019 Honda Civic Type R and the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N, it’s the little details that make all the difference with these two hot hatches. In terms of performance and looks, these vehicles are neck-and-neck. So let’s break down the specs and take a close look at what stands out about these two remarkable vehicles.

Engine Performance

In terms of the engine performance, the Type R pulls a little harder. But the Veloster N is not that far behind, with the difference is barely noticeable. The Type R has 306 HP/295 LB-FT torque from a 2 liter 4 cylinder turbo as opposed to the Veloster N, which has 275 HP / 260 LB-FT torque from a 1.6 liter turbo. Lots of power in small packages from both of these.

The Type R has three driving modes, Comfort, Sport and +R.  But even the +R driving mode isn’t too stiff to drive on regular roads! The Veloster N has three modes, Normal, Sport and Eco. It also has two modes N and N Custom. When the Veloster N is in N mode, the suspension is incredibly stiff, almost unbearably stiff.

However, you can customize the Veloster N’s suspension in the N mode to make it less stiff on regular roads. In the Type R, you cannot customize the drive modes. Hyundai prioritizes customization by putting a large drive mode button and N button on the steering wheel!

Transmissions

Both the Type R and the Veloster N have six speed manual transmissions that help drivers have the most control over their hot hatch. The Veloster N has an electronically-controlled exhaust valve that can be opened or closed at any time, creating a beautiful popping and crackling throughout the rev-range. The Civic R, unfortunately, has a more tame exhaust note with no adjustability, but still sounds amazing with the turbocharger.

Rev-Matching

Both vehicles have automatic rev- matching. The Veloster N executes it’s rev- matching slightly better than the Type R, providing a giant convenient button on the steering wheel to turn the rev- matching on and off. You can also customize the Veloster N’s rev-matching through the drive modes, which offers an unreal level of customization for drivers. The rev- matching in the Type R is buried in the vehicle settings and can be a challenge to remember how to turn it on and off!

The Veloster N also has a real launch control and you can set the RPMs with the cruise control button! The Type R has a rev- limiter built-in launch control, but it is automatic.

Customizability

Maybe the biggest distinction between the Veloster N and the Type R is the amount of in-vehicle customizability available in the Veloster N as opposed to the Type R. The Veloster N definitely gets the prize for the number of drive settings you can customize manually. interior

You can customize virtually everything in the Veloster N. In the customization menu, under Powertrain you can customize  Engine, rev Matching, e-LSD, and exhaust sound. Under the chassis, you can customize your suspension, steering, and ESC options.

However, the Type R is overall more user-friendly and transitions smoothly from a vehicle you could daily drive to an all-out sports vehicle. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you are looking for in a sports vehicle.

Vehicle Designs

Let’s talk about the feel and look of these vehicles. The shift knob in the Type R is a smooth round metal and doesn’t require a shift ring to go into reverse. As for the feel of the transmission shift, the Type R has a smoother clean feel compared with the Veloster N. car

As for the height of the shifter, the Veloster N’s shifter rests precisely at the height of the driver’s knee. In the Type R, the driver’s knee is approximately 4-5 inches below the shifter knob.

This difference is due to an overall lower driver position in the Type R. This gives the Type R a more racecar type of feel, whereas the Veloster N is more of your everyday get-in-and-go vehicle.

Pedal placement is fantastic in both of these vehicles. It’s easy to turn off rev- matching and just rev– match yourself in both of these cars. Heel-toe-downshifting is great and seemingly easy to learn in both cars.

The Type R has a gigantic wing, wide body fender flares, and triple exhaust giving it an awesome sporty look that stands out! The Type R’s four doors and extra interior space makes it an overall more practical choice.

Both the 2019 Honda Civic Type R and the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N have had their limits extensively tested on the Nürburgring, though so far the Type R holds the record.
